What are backlinks?
Backlinks--or back-links (UK)--are links coming in to a particular web page, or the domain in general. In the world of SEO (search engine optimization), one indication of the popularity or importance of a web site or webpage is the number of backlinks to it (however, other metrics such as Page Rank may be even more important).

Outside of SEO, a webpage's inbound links--another name for backlinks--may be of high semantic, personal or cultural interest: they signify who pays attention to that webpage.

In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link going from one web node (which could be the top level domain, a directory, a web page, or a website) to another web node (Björneborn and Ingwersen, 2004). Besides being sometimes called inbound links, Backlinks are also referred to as incoming links, inward links, or inlinks.
